Imagine this! Follow my words clearly. A lady is convicted of killing her daughter from her first marriage with the help of her second husband because the daughter was in a relationship with her third husband’s ex-wife’s son. Confusing & shocking, right? This is precisely what happened in Indrani Mukerjea (formerly known as Pori Bora): the mother.
On April 24, 2012, Sheena Bora (the daughter who got killed) took leave from the office, and by the evening resigns from the company over an email and never returns. The office doesn’t care. Why would they?
The boyfriend/ Husband - Rahul Mukerjea (there has been no/little evidence that they got married) gets an SMS that she is going out with her mother and would be back the next morning. But instead, switches off her mobile, and disappears. When he probes in, Indrani tells him that Sheena went to the US because she isn’t happy in the relationship. Just like that! But he cares and tries to file a complaint with the police, but police do have certain rules. So they contact Indrani, and she tells the police that Rahul is stalking Sheena even after she broke up and left for the US. Why would the police doubt a mother’s statement about her daughter against a man? So, the police stopped caring.
Mikhail Bora, the brother, didn’t bother about her sister and the grandparents who raised Sheena, too, didn’t bother. Or did they? Just because of the assurance from Indrani, did they feel that nothing was wrong?
All the friends and Rahul got emails and calls from Sheena in the US occasionally, so they didn’t suspect a thing.
29 months later, Shyamvar Pinturam Rai, Indrani’s driver is caught for illegal possession of guns and during the interrogation, reveals that he along with Indrani, Sanjeev Khanna (the second-husband) strangled Sheena Bora on April 24 and burnt the corpse on the next day in the forest area of Gagode village.
For 29 months, no one batted an eye, dug deep for the sudden exile of Sheena Bora. And the truth, too, unfolded in a totally unrelated case! The irony! The CBI claims that Indrani did confess of texting, calling Sheena’s friends not to raise any suspicions.
Indrani is clearly the type of woman who used/ married men for escalating the social ladder and discarded them. Right from her first marriage to the third, she simply dejected the existing ones and wooed the next, more socially & financially settled target. With Siddharth Das: the first husband (they aren’t married, and this fact was unveiled only in 2015. But I term him ‘First Husband’ for easier understanding), she had Sheena Bora in 1987 at the age of 15 and Mikhail Bora in 1988 at the age of 16. And in 1989, she just left, leaving the husband and the two infants to her parents with no trace.
Again, the controversies of this exist. According to Indrani, she was 17 when she gave birth to Sheena. The more shocking revelation is that Sheena is born because of a taboo/ forced relation between Indrani and her father(stepfather), whom she alleged of forcing himself onto her. TOO MANY LAYERS OF TWISTS.
Cut to Kolkata,1993, she marries Sanjeev Khanna: a well-known, the go-to man, for many people in Kolkata who never aspired to make it big in life despite his high-profile contacts. And, as expected, Indrani would force him to climb the social status ladder, and wooed by her, he tried. But, she was never satisfied and wished to make it big in the dream city - Mumbai! She shifted to Mumbai, met Peter Mukerjea, a big-shot in a five-star hotel during a party, and they both left together after the party. Her skills should be noted here as Peter Mukerjea, who came to the party with his girlfriend, ditched her and went with Indrani in her trance. So charming.
Everything went downhill when Sheena and Mikhail moved to Mumbai in 2006, and Rahul: Son of Peter Mukerjea, fell for Sheena, and they both started dating. How can they? They are step-siblings, right? Because, neither Rahul, nor Peter, nor anyone in Mumbai knew that Shenna and Mikhail were Indrani’s children. She introduced them to everyone as her sister and brother. The forged birth certificates show that they are born to UPENDRA KUMAR BORA, DURGA RANI BORA, none other than their grandparents. So no one really cared! Not even Indrani’s husband.
The thought of Sheena getting a significant share of Peter’s inheritance irked both Indrani and Sanjeev Khanna (the jealous father of Vidhie Khanna, now adopted- Vidhie Mukerjea). Sanjeev in the aspiration to let her own daughter inherit more money, Indrani aspiring not to let Sheena acquire more money, they killed her, together.
One of my ‘rich’ friends told me that the rich don’t care much about relationships, and this case stands as a testament to that. We can never imagine marrying someone whose relatives and parents you have no idea about. It’s beyond questioning for us, but somehow, these people didn’t care.
As it is the case in many other murder crimes, few things remain unsolved and mysterious.
The SMS data retracted by the CBI. In September 2012, five months after Sheena was killed, shows:
Rahul: I’m waiting in the car park.
Sheena: Coming, let’s go fast.
That was all! Indicating as if they did meet. What happened that day?
This text revelation is a recent one, in early 2020, part of fifth bail plea by Indrani. So, the followup isn’t possible, and we would have to wait.
Siddhartha Das (alleged first-husband, alleged father of Sheena Bora) lies to the court that he wasn’t in touch with Sheena but his call, message records show that he is in touch. And blessed the new couple - Rahul and Sheena, when they got married. Why did he lie?
Peter Mukerjea is arrested, too, and termed as “The Silent Killer” by the CBI. They had little proof that he was a part of this ‘Criminal Conspiracy’ proving that he wouldn’t let Rahul dig deep about Sheena. But the courts believed that the evidence wasn’t enough after four long years. On March 20, 2020, he’s released on bail; just 3 days before the lockdown. Bad luck?
Former Mumbai police commissioner, the one who investigated Ajmal Kasab of 26/11 attacks, raised doubts about his sudden promotion and transfer amidst progress making in the Sheena Bora's case. And, also claims that his superiors kept him in the dark area of the truths and never revealed that they knew Peter Mukerjea personally. This particular claim, raising questions on the extent of Peter's involvement.

With such an interesting premise, you would expect the movie to be great, right? But the movie is boring, way off from the facts and would be a waste of time according to me.

And BTW, another interesting fact: She turned into a police approver in the corruption case against P. Chidambaram, our former Union minister of Finance and also our former minister of Home affairs. She stated that along with her third-husband Peter Mukerjea, while they were the founders of INX Media (now 9X Media), bribed around 35 crores for... Let’s just say, to turn a blind eye on their money launderings and illegal money-making.
The thing that wondered me is: Can a convicted daughter-killer be considered as a witness, that too, in such a hyped & high-profiled case in our court of law? Should we or shouldn’t we have some moral standards for the witnesses and accusers?
